On February 13, 2025, Rosa and I had the privilege of visiting the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii, located in the historic Fort DeRussy, nestled in the heart of Waikiki. Established to commemorate the rich military history of Hawaii and the U.S. Army, this museum is a hidden gem that offers a fascinating glimpse into the island’s strategic significance during various conflicts, especially World War II.
As I approached the museum, I was struck by its beautifully landscaped grounds, which once served as a military installation. The building itself is adorned with exhibits and historical artifacts relevant to Hawaii’s military past. Entry is free, making it an accessible experience for both locals and tourists alike.
Inside, the museum features an array of displays, including uniforms, weapons, and photographs that chronicle the evolution of the U.S. Army in the Pacific. One of the highlights for me was the detailed section on the role Hawaii played during World War II—especially the attack on Pearl Harbor—which emphasizes the islands’ critical position in the Pacific theater.
Walking through the various galleries, I was impressed not only by the wealth of knowledge shared by the exhibits but also by the personal stories of soldiers and their families that brought the history to life. Interactive displays and informative plaques provided context that deepened my understanding of the sacrifices made by those who served.
The visit culminated in the stunning views from the museum’s outdoor area, where I could see the ocean stretching out toward the horizon, a poignant reminder of the strategic waters that have witnessed so much history. Overall, my time at the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii was both educational and inspiring, leaving me with a newfound appreciation for the military’s role in shaping the islands’ heritage. I would highly recommend this museum to anyone looking to enrich their understanding of Hawaii’s unique military history.
